A paraphrase of Romans 8:31-39
We did this so you would know, could experience, depend on and live in our love. Dad, me [Jesus], Mom, all want you to be absolutely certain, to feel it in your bones, that there isn’t anything on this earth, anything you can do, any way you can think or believe that would affect how much we love you. We know you have self-doubts. We know you want to do everything right. We know how much you think you fail. We even know how much you actually fall short, whether you can acknowledge it or not. We know your passions. We know your fears. We know what you hide from everyone else. We know who you truly are. And we love you. Not just “to the moon and back” – the universe cannot contain our love for you. Everything in creation is permeated with our love for you. Every birdsong is singing it, every flower’s beauty is proclaiming it, every star’s shine is spreading it. Every colour, the breeze in the air, the sunlight, plants growing, bugs flying, animals running, water flowing are all proclaiming the same message: We love you, we love you, WE LOVE YOU!

So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chose? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us – who was raised to life for us! – is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture.
None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing – nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable – absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.
